Without one the people in the business can't have a point of reference to cast you in a certain role.
They need a headshot to even consider you for an audition.
Unless you are one of the lucky few who are pulled in randomly :)
There are different types you can get, colour and black and white etc., but a headshot is crucial.
The headshot has to be a true image of yourself - if you get someone to photoshop the picture sooooo much and the image is not a true likeness to you when you turn up for the audition, they may ask themselves who you are and where the person in the picture is :(

Make sure you try not to deviate too much from your headshot when you get it, e.g. hair length etc.
